- Locomotion: walk, run, hop, jump, skip, gallop, leap, shuffle- these form the foundation of many dance and sport movements.
- Spacial & body awareness: A large variety of manipulative objects like hula hoops, jump ropes, bean bags and the like are used.
- Team Building: Small groups are given a physical task that needs the group to problem solve and cooperate for success.
- Cooperative games: Can take the form of large group games that promote working together, or smaller groups for problem solving activities. This is mostly done in the older grades.
- Large group games: These help foster an understanding of spacial awareness, working cooperatively, competitive concepts like offense and defense, sportsmanship and it's importance, and a general love of movement in play. This category includes tag games of all kinds, parachute activities and can involve some sports skills like throwing and catching.
- Coordination activities: This group of classes uses a lot of circus related equipment to build large motor and fine motor muscle control. They may juggle scarves, bean bags, balls, and rings. They may balance on boards and walking stilts, use pogo sticks, scoop toss and ring toss. Bowling, paddle skills with generic paddles, and jump rope units are included here. Sorry, no unicycles.
- Fitness Unit: Students are always reminded of the 3 areas of fitness [Flexibility. Strength. Endurance.] but this unit gets more specific and focuses on those concepts longer and in a fun way.
- Dance: One or two classes a year will often find all classes enjoying simple line dances to many styles of music.
- Mat skills: Mostly simple balance and tumbling activities are taught as an intro to dance and gymnastics. Also taught are many exercises since the vast majority of activities on floor mats involve exercise.
- Climbing activities: The students experience climbing a cargo net and get to swing on a rope in a controlled and padded environment. This is a really fun way to develop upper body strength.
- Throwing & catching skills: Proper technique for throwing and catching such different objects in sports and leisure like football, Frisbee, lacrosse, baseball and more are taught throughout the school year. These sports are not covered in depth.
- Base games: An understanding of baseball and softball are taught using kickball and whiffle-ball as a substitute. We go into various degrees of depth depending on grade level.
- Floor Hockey: involves stick handling, passing, shooting and goal tending skills and have lead-up games in the older grades.
- Basketball: involves dribbling, passing, shooting and defending skills and may have lead-up games in the older grades.
- Volleyball: involves bump passing, setting and spiking skills and may have lead-up games in the older grades.
- Soccer: involves dribbling, passing, shooting and goal tending skills and may have lead-up games in the older grades.
- Lacrosse: involves throwing, catching, scooping and passing skills and may have lead-up in the older grades.
- Tennis: We use rackets in drills to learn to control a modified tennis ball and also hit it over a modified tennis net to each other.
